What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry refers to the use of medications to help patients feel more relaxed during their dental procedures. There are a variety of sedation methods that range from ‘laughing gas’ to being asleep during the procedure. In any case, all sedation methods have the same purpose – to alleviate dental anxieties in order for necessary dental procedures to take place. Speak with your dentist about which sedation dentistry options may be best for you.
What Types of Sedation Medication Do You Provide?
At Strathroy Family Dental, we have oral and inhalation options that you can choose from for your sedation medication.
We recommend oral sedation for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. When you arrive at the clinic, you will be given a pill that you should take at least 45 minutes before your appointment starts to get effective results. The dose will depend on the level of sedation that you require. Our dentists will give you detailed instructions for the medication and procedure.
For moderate to severe anxiety, we will administer nitrous oxide (laughing gas). We will put a mask over the nose where the patient will breathe in the gas. Effects from nitrous oxide are brief, so you don’t need to ask for a ride home or wait after your appointment for the effects to wear off.
Am I Eligible for Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is suitable for almost everybody! As long as you meet the age and weight requirements for the type of sedation you are looking to receive, then you can speak you’re your dentist about safely pursuing this option. Sedation dentistry is great for people who have a hard time sitting still for long periods of time or for those who have dental anxieties. It is also suitable for people who cannot tolerate dental pain.
